Preparing for Agasthyamala Trekking

Agasthyamala is a mystical mountain range located in the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent. It is known for its scenic beauty, lush green forests, and a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. Trekking in Agasthyamala is an experience of a lifetime that every adventure lover should indulge in. But before you plan your trek, here are some things you need to keep in mind:

  • Fitness: Agasthyamala Trek is a moderate to difficult level trek, and it is recommended that you prepare yourself by building your stamina and strength. Start practicing some light exercises, and gradually increase the intensity to match the level of the trek.
  • Packing essentials: Some of the items that you must pack are a good quality trekking shoes, backpack, waterproof jackets, thermal wear, hats, sunglasses, sunscreens, and insect repellents.
  • Food and Water: Carry sufficient food and water, and don't litter along the way. You can also buy food and water at some of the campsites.
  • Permits: You need to get a permit from the Forest Department before starting the trek. Book your permits in advance.
  • Guide: It is mandatory to trek with a guide.

CheckList

  • Two pairs of quick-dry tees
  • One or two pairs of trekking pants/quick dry pants (Denim are not recommended for treks.)
  • 1 Pair of Cotton Socks, 1 pairs of woolen socks
  • Breathable briefs/underwears
  • A waterproof jacket just in case it rains.
  • A lightweight jacket, to be worn at night. A windproof/waterproof jacket will also be fine.
  • A lightweight blanket to cover yourself while sleeping at night. The forest officials provide a mattress only.
  • Trekking shoes, preferably with ankle support. You can use a sports shoe as well but ensure it has a good grip on rough terrains.
  • Flip flops/sandals that you can use at the campsite.
  • Thermal Wear @ at nights
  • Sun Cap, Lightweight and quick-dry bathing towel
  • A hiking backpack/rucksack to be used for the trek
  • A small foldable, collapsible bag that you can use for the hike to the Agasthyakoodam peak.
  • Dark UV Sunglasses
  • Sunscreens
  • Insect repellents
  • pain relief spray & analgesic balm
  • Light weight food ( Bannana / Sandwich)
  • Snacks – peanuts, dry fruits, energy bars, fruits, etc. Remove all the plastic, put them in a container, or cover them with paper as plastic is strictly banned.
  • Mini First aid kit
  • Powerbank (useful especially if you plan for a 3-day trek) or Solar Power Bank (Optional)
  • 2 bottles of water - Plenty of natural water avaialble on the way
  • Entry pass, Medical certificate, Vsccination certifiate , Insurance , and photo id
  • Spare cash to pay for your meals on the trek
  • Camera with spare batteries (in case you have one)
  • Salt (for leeches)
  • Trekking pole or bamboo stick from the Bonacaud Forest Checkpost
  • Binoculars (Optional)
  • Camera (Optional)
  • Headlamp (optional)

During the Agasthyamala Trek

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and carry enough water bottles with you.
  • Follow the trail: Make sure to follow the trail and stay on the designated path to avoid getting lost.
  • Pace yourself: Take frequent breaks and pace yourself to avoid getting exhausted.
  • Respect nature: Respect nature and don't disturb the flora and fauna.
  • Campsites: Use designated campsites and avoid setting up campfires to prevent forest fires.

After the Agasthyamala Trek

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and replenish your body with essential nutrients.
  • Rest: Take enough rest to rejuvenate your body and mind.
  • Reflect: Reflect on the experience and the lessons learned during the trek.
